Speaker notes: In antiretroviral therapy, we need to understand the PK principles that have been worked out and studied in other therapeutic areas:

e.g. antibiotics; it is well known that some antibiotics kill bacteria in a concentration-dependent fashion, where the Cmax is the important PK parameter to monitor.
for other drugs it is the time above the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) that is important, and the parameter of interest here is the area-under-curve (AUC).

These principles must be taken through to antiretroviral drugs.
